Abilities & Upgrades
Progression / unlocks
IRON NEST features around 20 unlockable abilities and a deep table of ammunition. Here's how progression widens your options as an operator over the campaign.
The machine grows as you do.
IRON NEST doesn’t hand you the whole machine at once. The full game is expected to feature roughly 20 unlockable abilities alongside its deep table of around 30 ammunition types — a steady drip of new options that keeps the campaign opening up.
What progression does
Early on, your toolkit is deliberately narrow: core shells, core instruments, the basic loop. As you progress you unlock abilities that expand what you and the machine can do, and new ammunition that widens your answers to difficult targets. The game gets broader, not just harder.
Why it matters tactically
Each unlock changes the questions you can solve. A new specialist round turns a frustrating target into a routine one; a new ability might change how you handle the intel chain or the firing loop. The interplay between abilities and ammunition is a big part of the late-game depth — and a strong reason to keep playing.
Spending your unlocks well
- Shore up weaknesses first. If a particular target type keeps costing you shells, unlock the answer to it.
- Pair abilities with ammo. The best upgrades amplify a round you already use well.
- Think about the clock. Some unlocks help most in timed challenge modes where seconds count.
Exact ability lists and unlock orders are expected to be confirmed closer to launch; we’ll detail them here as the developers share specifics.
Its place in the game
Progression is the connective tissue between a single satisfying shot and a campaign’s worth of them. It’s what turns IRON NEST from a clever loop into something you grow into over many hours. See the rest of the systems to understand what each unlock is acting on.
